Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering


The Electronics and Communication Department is one of the oldest engineering departments of Institute of Engineering and Management. Accredited by the NBA and approved by AICTE it was established in the year 1996 under the affiliation of Kalyani University and subsequently under MaulanaAbulKalam Azad University of Technology (erstwhile West Bengal University of Technology). Right from its inception, it aimed towards imparting quality education with special emphasis on technical knowledge. The department started its postgraduate course in VLSI and Microelectronics since the year 2006. Every year close to 180 students in B-Tech and 18 students in M-Tech get admitted to this department. With access to the research in cutting edge technology, students from this department have maintained a consistent balance between academic excellence and extra–curricular activities which is reflected in their achievements in the technical fests, science exhibitions, cultural fests, etc. Students are encouraged to take part in technical trainings, workshops, visits to companies like BSNL, VECC of Bhaba Atomic Research Centre, ISI Kolkata, etc. It has been a tradition of this department to encourage the students to explore beyond the boundaries of a prescribed academic syllabus in order to hone their skills and enrich their knowledge. Our faculties emphasize state-of-the-art scientific and engineering methods pertinent to computer science and software engineering in order to lead students to a point of understanding where they remain inquisitive, serious, ethical, and creative problem solvers. The department provides wireless internet service round the clock to help students keep up with the ever changing world of engineering.

Here students are trained with good practical exposure by using modern equipped laboratories. Experiments are conducted and recorded, to analyze and interpret data in scientific and engineering aspects that cover multi-disciplinary subjects enabling them to comprehend, analyze ECE problems and develop solutions.

Our department has a very efficient placement cell which has provided jobs to all of its students in companies across multiple domains; Ericsson, Infosys, Sankalp Semiconductors to name a few. Students seeking higher education go to top research facilities and universities in India and abroad (US/Europe) to pursue their Doctorate/ Masters. We have a well-balanced group of faculty members from all age groups that include industrial and academic experts who have published more than 400 research papers in international journals. We also enjoy strong support of an alumni network of over 2000 professionals who have established themselves in their respective fields.

The ECE department at IEM has been setting exemplary standards since its inception and is well on course to continue the tradition for years to come. It is an honour to represent this department as its H.o.D and be an integral part of its endeavours. The department strongly believes in the ability of its students to leave a global footprint, assisted by a highly qualified pool of professors. The students are encouraged to take up challenging projects involving embedded systems, VLSI, DSP, image processing and to publish their work in various journals. Students are bred to follow a philosophy that does not set boundaries to their ability to learn and the same has been established through their contribution to various researches.

The department puts strong emphasis on imparting practical education by carefully administering proper lab work to complement their theoretical knowledge. For years, this department has strived to project its professors as mentors who can foster growth of the students beyond the boundaries of classrooms and books. The success stories of the students and alumni stretch far beyond academic achievements. The students of this department have consistently performed par excellence at fests and events which have tested their ability to integrate their knowledge with innovation and forward thinking. The department perseveres to equip students with capabilities to transcend the boundaries of academic realms.

Knowledge of basic Engineering Sciences:To produce ECE graduates who have strong foundation in mathematics, sciences and basic engineering. Prepare them with strong engineering knowledge and technical competence to use techniques, skills and modern engineering tools that allow them to work effectively in areas such as Semiconductors, VLSI Devices, Analog & Digital Circuits and Systems, Communications, Signal Processing, Control Systems, Electromagnetics & Microwave Engineering.


Engineering Design Skills:To equip the students with the necessary problem solving skills relevant to the general practice of Engineering design.


Preparation for Further Study: To produce engineering graduates who have the ability to pursue advanced studies and research in all disciplines.


Laboratory Skills: Train students with good practical exposure by using modern equipped laboratories. Conduct experiments, record, analyze and interpret data in scientific and engineering aspects that cover multi-disciplinary subjects enabling them to comprehend, analyze ECE problems and develop solutions.


Technical Knowledge: To impart the knowledge of theory and practices of ECE and its applications in areas of modern research and current industry trends to the students.

Develop an ability to relate engineering issues to broader social context and equip them with strong knowledge, competence and soft skills that allows them to contribute to the needs of industry, consultancy, government and academia.
